Dubai to open two new Emirates Road lanes, boosting capacity by 33pc
Five-kilometre upgrade will raise traffic flow to 16,000 vehicles per hour
DUBAI – The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will open two new lanes on Emirates Road on 30 August, expanding a five-kilometre section carrying traffic from Sharjah towards Wadi Al Amardi Area.
The project will increase the number of lanes from six to eight, raising the road’s capacity by 33 percent.
RTA said the upgrade is expected to cut journey times by up to 25 percent during peak hours.
Higher capacity
The expanded section will increase traffic capacity from 12,000 to 16,000 vehicles per hour. The improvement is part of RTA’s wider programme to strengthen key road corridors, improve operational efficiency and address growing travel demand between Dubai and the Northern Emirates.
RTA said its road development plans are informed by traffic studies and take into account population growth and urban development. The latest Emirates Road works are intended to provide additional capacity while supporting safer and more efficient movement along one of the UAE’s major transport routes.
Major corridor
Emirates Road connects Dubai with the Northern Emirates and carries large volumes of private vehicles and trucks. More than 240,000 vehicles use the road in both directions every day, with the corridor linking Dubai to major roads, residential communities and industrial and logistics areas.
The latest expansion follows several earlier improvements along Emirates Road. These have included a new access point connecting to Al Awir 1, traffic solutions at various locations, upgrades to entry and exit points, and improved connectivity with Al Amardi Street and surrounding development areas.
RTA said the continuing upgrades are designed to strengthen connectivity and support Dubai’s growing mobility requirements as development and daily travel volumes increase.
